Star Trek Presentation

Researching how much of an influence the Star Trek franchise has had on developing things today honestly blew my mind. It is so crazy to see TV and film predict the future of technology and the future of society just by using their imagination. We noted that Star Trek has several technology devices that are used quite often today, including facial and voice recognition, holograms, tablets, video chat, earpiece communicators, and communicators that flip open. It also included futuristic technology such as ray guns, time travel, and energy "beaming" teleportation.

Each of us made connections to our majors and the Star Trek franchise, and I honestly thought I wouldn't;t notice anything being a marine science major. It was difficult comparing technology used in space to technology that is used underwater, but I noticed that the spaceships in Star Trek had infrared cameras in order to detect anything in the ships surroundings. Infrared technology is used all of the time in the marine science community to track animals, and to observe ocean processes involving weather and climate change. This technology measures differences in temperature to distinguish things in the surrounding water, it can even detect plastics in the ocean when it is attached to an aircraft. Star Trek also uses intelligent cameras that can superzoom into things far way from the ship. Intelligent cameras have been developed and are being used within the marine science community to monitor and track endangered species. these cameras start recording when it hears the noise the specific animal makes, and can record optimal ocean conditions for specific species.

The Star Trek movies also have had huge cultural impacts within American society. It broke societal norms that were forced upon different races and women by including several characters of different races and women as crew members of the ship. The diversity seen in Star Trek began opening up the minds of close minded viewers, and introduced incorporation of everyone into the workforce to many. Several spaceships are named after things in Star Trek, including the Space Shuttle Enterprise, name after the U.S.S. Enterprise. Finally, "Operation Warp Speed" was a project that was conducted by the U.S. Department of Defense to help get COVID vaccines out as quickly and safely as possible.
