Star Trek Episode One and Picard Episode One

Watching the very first episode of the series Star Trek was incredibly interesting! I love watching older television and film because of the simplicity of it. It isn't overloaded with special effects or CGI, and I feel that it's much more organic. Although the ship in this episode is much less advance as the Enterprise depicted in the movie, they were still very similar and I liked seeing how the film kept many ideas the same as the original series. The spaceships both had central captains chairs which highlighted the captains power, they both had the "beaming" teleportation technology, ray guns, and they were wearing the same iconic outfits. It was very interesting seeing the characters have to play their own main characters, and their characters disguised as Ms. Crater. It showed different sides to each of the actors and it made the episode much more engaging. The sets on the different planet and in the ship were incredibly detailed and were super interesting to compare to the sets in the film. Knowing these sets were handmade, it was interesting seeing the arid, desolate planet and how they depicted that in the episode. The sip's set was also very intricate, illustrating the vast amount of functions that the ship is capable performing. Overall, I really enjoyed watching the first episode of Star Trek and I honestly wish I could continue to watch the series.

The first episode of Picard was also extremely interesting. The timelines in the Star Trek universe definitely confuse me a little, but from what I believe this series is set in the future. It is very interesting seeing Romulans and humans live in peace after watching the film, and I wonder what made them achieve this peace between the two races. In the series, highly advanced artificial intelligence live among humans, just like Blade Runner. They cannot easily be distinguished between humans and have superhuman abilities. Dahj is a synthetic, or artificial intelligence, but she didn't know she was not human. Why would her family keep this huge secret from her? Obviously, her new abilities scared her, and she had visions of Picard during her near arrest. She had no idea who he was, but found him and needed his protection. I thought it was very interesting how it is revealed that all artificial intelligence was formed from Data, Picard's AI assist. Why is Data the blueprint? Was he the first partially sentient artificial intelligence to be developed? How did Data come up with the idea of the painting a girl and name it "Daughter?" I am interested in the background information relating to Data's past and construction in order to better understand the development of highly advanced artificial intelligence in the Star Trek universe. I also would like to know more about how each synthetic is made with a copy, making all of them twins. I have a twin brother and I think it would be really interesting to see how the twin synthetics interact and the relationships they can form with each other. Overall, I thought the first episode was super interesting and I would love to continue watching to learn more about borgs and how Picard fits into all of this.

Additional Notes Below:

First Episode of Star Trek Notes:

  • Looking for Ms. Crater
  • When they find her, she is able to alter her appearance to each crew member
  • Nancy kills other crew member
  • Professor Crater and Nancy Crater constantly need salt tablets
  • Nancy transforms into crew member; is she some sort of alien?
  • Nancy is "last of her kind"
  • The real Nancy is dead; "creature" killed her
  • Needs salt to be alive -> taking all of the salt from human bodies
  • Similar captain's chairs

Picard Episode One Notes:
  • Retired captain having bad dreams of the ship
  • Food is 3D printed
  • Dahj has vision of captain Picard
  • Dahj being hunted -> could be a Borg?
  • Romulans and humans live in harmony now
  • They say what they want and it is created
  • Has never spoken about separating from Starfleet
  • Synthetics= artificial intelligence
    • Hard to distinguish from humans; like Blade Runner
  • Dahj is Data's daughter?
  • Dahj gets attacked by what appears to be Romulans and dies
  • Dahj was a synthetic (artificial intelligence) that appeared to be human inside and out
  • Synthetics are banned; it is seemingly impossible to make a synthetic to look completely human
