The Adventures of Pinocchio

It was very interesting reading the original story of Pinocchio and seeing how different it is from the classic Disney film I watched when I was a kid. I also didn't know much about the story of Pinocchio at all  and I was pleasantly surprised by the very eventful story of Pinocchio questioning his existence as a marionette and becoming a real boy by maturing and learning several lesson while making countless mistakes.

The Adventures of Pinocchio essentially is a story warning kids about not listening to their elders. Pinocchio get robbed, almost killed multiple times, and lost throughout the story because he always ends up not listening to what his father or the maiden with Azul hair tells him and instead acts on his own selfish agenda. The story reveals to readers how children do not know what is best for them and have a tendency to choose light hearted things over the correct choice in many scenarios.

I also thought it was interesting how the character of the cricket represented Pinocchio's conscience, similar to Teddy in Artificial Intelligence. The cricket always tells Pinocchio what he knows he should do, but every time he chooses to do something completely different. This ultimately leads to Pinocchio being separated from his father for a very long time and losing many things in the process. When he finally develops a moral compass and becomes responsible, his wish of becoming a real boy comes true. The Pinocchio finally learns how to be responsible for himself and his actions, he begins to finally live a fulfilling life taking care of those he loves. I think an important message in this story is that growing up and becoming responsible isn't as bad as many young people think it is. I believe that Pinocchio was the happiest once he grew up and began making the correct decisions.

I have attached my additional notes below:

  1. I loved that you mentioned the comparison between the Talking Cricket from Pinocchio and Teddy from from A.I.. I agree both these characters, though also nonhuman, clearly represent the consciences of Pinocchio and David. Pinocchio does not listen to his conscience for the majority of the novel, even "killing" it in the beginning, until he finds learned to heed his father's and the Blue Fairy's advice, like the Cricket was saying all along. Teddy is on equal importance in Artificial Intelligence because he consistently remains by David's side, keeping him safe and offering aid when needed, especially in the end when he makes it possible for David to have one final day with his mother, Monica.
